Why hunter and ret got recut

21 September 2026

Every spec on the site has its own parse curve: the table that turns a DPS number into a parse by comparing it with everyone else's runs on that spec. The curves are cut to two targets. One run in a hundred and fifty should be a 100, and the median run should be an 87. Same targets for every spec, so a 90 means the same thing whatever you play.

Curves drift. The players on a spec get better, or a patch changes what a spec can draft, and the targets slide. We do not touch a curve by feel. There is a read-only check that looks at the last two weeks of real runs per spec and reports three things: how often a 100 landed, what the median parse was, and whether the specs can still be told apart by difficulty. When they can, something is off.

What the check said

On 21 September it flagged two specs and cleared the rest. Fury, Rogue, Shadow, Fire and Warlock all sat at or near one 100 per 150 runs with medians between 85 and 89. Marksmanship Hunter was landing a 100 every 53 runs, three times too often, with a median just under 90. Ret Paladin was the opposite: a 100 every 337 runs and a median of 74.6, twelve points under target, which meant every Ret parse on the board read low all the way down the curve.

Both were known. Hunter's bar had been set when the spec was a week old and the field has learned it since. Ret's curve was cut from a smaller sample and the shape never matched how people actually draft it.

What moved

Only the two outliers. The recut takes the last fourteen days of finished Standard runs on the spec, fits a fresh curve to them, and sets the 100 bar where one run in 150 crosses it. Hunter's bar went from 974.6 to 997.7 DPS. Ret's bar barely moved, 1048 to 1042, but the curve under it reshaped, which is what pulls the median from 75 up to 87. The other five specs kept their curves exactly.

Nothing already played was rescored. Every run pins the curve version it was scored under, and the old version stays valid on the boards, so a Hunter 100 earned on the old bar is still a 100 and still on the board beside the new ones. The new bar applies to runs that start after the change. That is the rule for every scoring change on the site: forwards only, never retroactive.

Why mid-month

Scoring changes normally wait for the first of the month, so a month's board is one set of rules from start to finish. This one went early on purpose: a spec handing out 100s three times too often devalues every 100 on its board for as long as it runs, and eleven more days of that was the bigger cost. The trade was called, not drifted into, and it is written down here so the next one is judged the same way.

The check runs again in a week. Hunter and Ret should then sit with the rest, and if they do not, the next recut waits for 1 October like everything else.
